The future of our mountains: a debate for a responsible future

Our mountains tomorrow: debate for a responsible future

To shed light on this issue,
Sciences Po Alumni's Environment and Sustainable Development group,
Arts et Métiers Alumni's GP21 Sustainable Development & CSR
and Ponts Alumni's Ecological Transition group

are pleased to present a dialogue between :

Valérie Paumier
Representative of the NGO Résilience Montagne

And

David Ponson
Director of Ski Areas and Outdoor Activities, Compagnie des Alpes

The mountains are at the forefront of global warming: melting glaciers, dying forests, impoverished soils... all threaten vital resources and raise questions about the viability of an economic model based almost exclusively on "winter sports" tourism.

What are the pillars of this mountain economy? What is at stake? What economic, political and governance dynamics are at work? Are there alternatives to the current model? How can it evolve to reconcile development and resilience, habitability and attractiveness? What are the obstacles to its transformation?

These are just some of the questions our guests will attempt to answer.

Coming from the other side of the mirror with an international career (Africa, Hong Kong, Geneva in the fields of finance, tourism and property development), Valérie Paumier was more in charge of developing the vis-à-vis-vis businesses, which she is now trying to raise awareness of as increasing the vulnerability of mountain areas to climate change.

A graduate of the École nationale supérieure d'arts et métiers in Paris, David Ponson joined Compagnie des Alpes in 1996. A member of the Executive Committee since 2011 as Director of Operations for the Ski Areas Division, he became Director in 2016, overseeing the Group's mountain real estate projects. Since 2021, he has been Director of the Mountain and Outdoor Activities Division, which includes winter/summer diversification in addition to ski area management. David Ponson is also Chairman of the Savoie section of Domaines skiables de France and Chairman of the Training section of Domaines skiables de France.
