Exploration for natural or native hydrogen is in full swing. The start of production ten years ago from an accumulation in Mali paved the way. Some countries have adapted their mining laws. Numerous surface showings and the recovery of data from old wells have made it possible to delineate prospective zones. The first dedicated H2 wells were drilled, particularly in the USA and Australia. Natural hydrogen, also known as white hydrogen, is a clean, partly renewable and competitive energy source that could play a crucial role in the energy transition, complementing other low-carbon hydrogens.

How is it formed? Where can it be found? What is the current state of exploration worldwide? What is the potential in France? These are the questions Isabelle Moretti will be answering.

Olivier Lhote will give the point of view of an industrialist involved in this exploration, addressing questions of regulatory framework, financing and support mechanisms.

Isabelle Moretti is a researcher at the Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour and Sorbonne University. She is also Vice-Chairwoman of the Académie des technologies' energy division.

Olivier Lhote is director of natural hydrogen projects at Storengy, coordinating exploration projects, particularly in Morocco and France, as well as research projects. He previously worked for ENGIE on storage and transport activities for green hydrogen production projects. Previously, he began his career in the gas sector, first with Total, then with ENGIE, where he helped create and develop the exploration business.
